Frequently asked questions

How long will it take?

It really does vary as to how long the work could take, with each project being unique. We will give you an idea upfront of the likely timescale, and will keep in regular contact to let you know how the work is progressing.

How much does it cost?

Our pricing varies depending on the complexity of the work required. We offer a range of options to fit your needs and budget where possible, and will provide an estimate of costs after discussing your requirements. The basic hourly rate for work done is £30, but other factors such as materials will be added on top of this.

Do you use an airbrush?

No, Mandy doesn't actually own an airbrush. Overpainting is kept to a minimum and where possible colour-matched fills are done to avoid the need for painting. Repairs are discreet, but not completely invisible.

Do you work on materials other than ceramics?

Yes! Mandy has an MSc in Conservation Practice from Cardiff University and is qualified in Objects Conservation. She has worked on a range of objects, spending two years working as an Archive Conservator, where she undertook paper and photographic conservation. She has also conserved natural history specimens, textiles, metals and archeological specimens.

What are kintsugi repairs?

Kintsugi is a Japanese method of repair, which translates as 'golden joinery'. After repair, pure gold is applied to break lines to enhance the beauty of the object and embrace the flaws. The traditional method uses urushi laquer and gold powder, which can take many months to fully cure. Mandy prefers to use modern methods and materials to speed up the process, but always using 23 carat gold to provide a beautiful result.

Can I send you a photo for you to estimate from?

We welcome as much information as possible, with photos being very helpful when providing an estimate. Photos from different angles in a well-lit setting are ideal, and something to show the scale (such as a coin or a hand) is even better.
